Emily W. Bernstein
Interdisciplinary artist
My practice explores the boundaries between authenticity, artificiality, and memory, and the challenges of remembering the past in an era shaped by digital mediation. I use a blend of analogue and digital media to navigate the instability of collective and personal memory, and to explore how generative processes can model absence and fabricate doubt.
Through immersive installations, objects, and creative nonfiction writing, I experiment with finding new ways of making the past legible, while also questioning our role in narrating it. My projects have ranged from reconstructing fragmented diasporic histories to revoicing the testimony of a dementia patient.

EDUCATION
I hold degrees in Unstable Media from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2019-2024), as well as a Research MA in Linguistics from Leiden Univeristy (2016-2018). Prior to this, I studied Spanish and Russian at New York University.
Before beginning my artistic studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, I worked as a research assistant and university lecturer, where my research into the potential applications of artificial intelligence in speech and hearing clinics would later influence my artistic research and practice.
